Are the containers weatherproof?

The industry term “Wind & Watertight” refers to containers that have experienced several years in service as an oversees shipping container, most often to Asia and back. They are now retired to their “second life” as a residential or business storage container here in the USA. They show some cosmetic wear and don’t look pretty, but are strong and secure for storage purposes. Wind and Watertight containers are inspected to ensure they keep out rain water, but are not expected to withstand flood waters or standing water scenarios. They are a great choice for budget-minded shoppers.

As with storage container, occasional maintenance is required.

Do I need to prepare the surface the container will be placed?

While not required, placing the container on gravel, concrete, or wood blocks (like 4x4s) helps with leveling and improves drainage to prevent rust.

Can the container be place on railroad ties or landscape timbers upon delivery?

Yes, the containers are designed to disburse their cargo weight to the corners of the container.  Many of our customers choose to provide drainage under the container by placing railroad ties/landscape timbers under each corner or on each end. Our drivers are able to assist you in doing so, but  we do not provide the railroad ties/landscape timbers.

How much room will the driver need for on-site delivery of my container?

20′ containers are typically delivered using a smaller rollback truck, while containers 40′ and longer are delivered with a tilt-bed trailer. During delivery, the driver will place one end of the container on the ground and slowly pull the truck forward, allowing the container to slide off into position.

Because of this process, the truck, trailer, and container must be aligned in a straight line during placement.

To ensure a smooth delivery, you’ll need the following straight clearance:

  • 20′ container: approximately 50–60 feet
  • 40′ container: approximately 80–100 feet
How much overhead clearance is needed to deliver my container?

14ft of overhead clearance is needed for delivery due to the tilt bed trailer’s requirement to raise the front end to roll your container into position. Any overhanging tree branches, power lines or roof line at the placement location will at risk of damage. Be sure your intended placement location has a minimum of 14ft overhead clearance.

How quickly will my container be delivered?

Delivery times vary by market and inventory availability. Once your order is placed, delivery will be expedited and arrive as soon as possible, often within a few days to a week or more. Delivery may be scheduled to allow time to prepare your placement spot.

Do I need to be present for delivery?

Yes, you will need to inspect the container and sign for the delivery.

Do I need to acquire a lock, or do you provide one with the container?

Locks vary in style and strength. It is more of a personal choice. Our staff will advise you on the style and brand of locks we recommend you purchase from your local hardware store or online.

What material is the container made of?

The containers are comprised of 14-gauge corrugated steel panels throughout. The interior flooring is either 1-1/8” thick marine plywood or bamboo, or in some cases corrugated steel.

Can I acquire financing?

SRC coordinates with the top choices for financing to make your purchase even easier. Many options provide funding in just a few days. Visit our Financing Page for more information.

Do you offer Rent-to-Own?

Yes, with prior approval from Rent-to-Own, your container can be delivered and monthly payments are submitted directly to Rent-to-Own.

Should I buy New, Used, or Wind & Water Tight?

All our storage containers will get the job done, but there are distinct differences in the cosmetic condition of the containers. The first question to ask is: What matters most to YOU – price or appearance?

One-trip (new) or nearly new containers are the recommended choice when appearance is the top priority  and have typically been used between 1-3 times to travel to and from Asia.

Used containers are recommended when price and appearance are equally important. Used containers are typically 1-3 years old and have some moderate cosmetic scratches or dents, and minor surface rust. They are less expensive but just as strong and dependable.

Wind & Water Tight containers have experienced many more overseas trips, and will show more signs of use (not as pretty), but are a great budget friendly choice for most storage needs.
