Choosing the RIGHT Shipping Container Grade

Understanding Container Grades

Not all steel shipping containers are the same—and that’s where we come in. Containers are available in different grades, each reflecting how they look, how they perform, and how they’ve been used over time. Knowing the difference is key to getting exactly what you need.

At SRC, our focus is simple: help you make the right choice with confidence. Whether you need a clean, like-new container for a professional setting or a solid, cost-effective unit for everyday storage, we take the guesswork out of the process.

We break down each container grade in plain terms, so you understand what you’re getting and why it fits your needs. From compact backyard containers to 40′ High Cube storage units, we’re here to guide you every step of the way—so you end up with the right container, not just any container.

New “1-Trip” Shipping Containers

If you’re looking for the closest thing to a brand-new container, this is it. “1-trip” containers are built overseas and then shipped to the U.S. with a single load of cargo—helping offset transportation costs before they ever reach their final destination.

Because they’ve only made one journey, these containers offer near-new condition without the higher price tag of ordering directly from the factory. It’s one of the most popular options for customers who want a clean, professional look with long-term durability.

At SRC, we recommend 1-trip containers when appearance, reliability, and lifespan matter most. They’re ideal for customer-facing applications, custom builds, or anyone who simply wants the best available condition.

What You Can Expect:

  • Like-new condition with only minor handling marks from transport
  • Clean interior—no leftover residue or strong odors
  • Original paint with a fresh, uniform finish
  • Doors that open and seal smoothly and securely
  • High-quality marine-grade wood flooring in excellent shape
  • Long service life, often 25–30 years with proper care

Want to see if a 1-trip container is the right fit for your project? We’re here to help you decide.

Level 1

Like New Condition – Competitive Pricing

Level 2 – Used Quality Storage Containers – Cargo Worthy (CW)

Used containers are a dependable, budget-friendly option that still meet strict industry standards. While these units have typically spent 10–15 years in active shipping service, they’re carefully evaluated to ensure they remain structurally sound and ready for your storage needs.

While Level 2 may be Cargo Worthy quality, they have NOT been certified for Overseas Travel. All containers sold by SRC are intended for residential or commercial storage within the United States.

At SRC, we often recommend Level 2 used containers for customers who need a strong, weather-resistant solution without paying for like-new condition. They strike a great balance between cost and performance.

Minimum Standards Include:

  • Fully sealed structure with no holes or leaks
  • Flooring in solid condition
  • Doors that open, close, and lock properly
  • Functional door seals and ventilation
  • Dents limited to acceptable industry tolerances

What You Can Expect:

  • Noticeable cosmetic wear from years of use
  • Strong structural integrity that meets maritime requirements
  • Wind and watertight protection for your belongings
  • Doors that operate reliably and seal as intended
  • A solid remaining lifespan, often 15–20 years

Not sure if Level 2 Used  is the right fit? We’ll walk you through your options and help you compare new vs. used so you can make the best decision for your needs.

level-2

Gently Used Condition – Better Pricing compared to New

Level 3 – Used Wind & Water Tight (WWT) Storage Containers

Wind & Water Tight (WWT) containers are a popular middle-ground option—offering solid weather protection at a more affordable price. While they’re no longer certified for shipping, they’re still a reliable choice for many everyday storage needs.

At SRC, we make sure you understand exactly what you’re getting. WWT containers are designed to keep the elements out, but they don’t meet the stricter structural requirements needed for ocean transport. That distinction matters—and we’ll always be upfront about it.

What “Wind & Water Tight” Means:

  • Keeps out rain, wind, and typical weather conditions with appropriate maintenance
  • May have minor structural imperfections that prevent shipping certification
  • Doors function, though seals may not meet shipping-grade standards
  • Flooring is usable but may show wear from years of service
  • Typically older units with visible signs of extended use

What You Can Expect:

  • Dependable protection for storage purposes
  • Cosmetic wear such as dents, rust spots, or surface imperfections
  • Floor or door wear, but still functional overall
  • Not eligible for international shipping certification
  • Remaining lifespan often in the 10–15 year range, depending on condition
  • More cost-effective than Level 2 containers

Why This Matters:
A WWT container is intended for storage, not transport.

level 3

Used Condition – Best Pricing for Secure Storage

Level 4 – Used As-Is Storage Containers

At SRC, we believe in being upfront so you know exactly what you’re getting. As-Is containers can be a practical option for certain uses, especially if budget is the top priority and you’re comfortable with a container that may need repairs or modifications.

These containers have typically reached the end of their shipping life and are no longer eligible for use in ocean transport. Their condition can vary widely from one container to another.

What “As-Is” means:

  • Level 4 “As-Is” storage containers are for the buyer seeking the lowest priced container with full understanding it may have structural repair needs not covered by SRC.

What You Can Expect:

  • Visible wear and tear, including possible holes or leaks in the roof, walls, or floor
  • Dents or structural imperfections that go beyond standard shipping tolerances
  • Doors that may be difficult to open, close, or seal properly
  • Flooring that may show damage or require repair
  • No longer eligible for cargo transport or certification
  • Lifespan that varies depending on current condition and any repairs made
